UAW Unions Spearhead Emergency Response Trainings

John Padget, AFL-CIO Community Services liaison with the Black Hawk Union Council, sends us this report.
The Black Hawk County UAW Local 838 Community Services Committee in Waterloo, Iowa, knows how important it is to be prepared when nature strikes in the Midwest. In June, Lee Bedore, Bryan Cue and I put on a class for UAW members in CERT (Community Emergency Response Team).
Dennis Williams, Region 4 UAW director, then asked UAW locals to put together CERT teams. This class helps people plan for and react to emergencies like floods, tornadoes and other natural disasters, training that has become especially important as local governments cut back on emergency responders. The goal is for citizens to be prepared for emergencies and, after taking care of their families and neighbors, to be able to help the community safely, until professionals arrive.
The people I work with on the Community Services Committee really care about their community and are always working hard to make the community a better place to live, work and raise a family.
